Chicken Birthday Cake

The white fondant chicken
For my Grandad’s birthday I made him a small sponge decorated with two chickens. To start, I made a small chocolate sponge and covered it in black cherry jam before covering it in white fondant. I then made the two chickens by rolling two different sized balls of fondant and gluing the smaller one on top of the larger ball at a slight angle. Then I thickly rolled out red icing and cut it with a daisy cutter before halving the flower and then cutting one half in half.  I left these to dry overnight before continuing. I made a small orange beak and piped on two black eyes. Then I glued the daisy half on the top of the chickens head as a cockscomb and attached the other half under the beak. I repeated this with a brown chicken before sticking them to the cake and writing a birthday message.

Snow Scene Cake

Covering the cake with fondant
Because snow is unlikely, I decided to make my own snowy scene! I made a vanilla traybake and put half of it in the freezer before decorating the other half. I made a vanilla buttercream and covered the whole cake in it before rolling two thick sausages of white icing and formed a hilly landscape. I then rolled out some white fondant and covered the whole cake in it.

My two snowmen

To decorate the cake, I made two snowmen by stacking two balls of white icing on top of each other. Next I made a bowler hat out of black fondant and a red Santa hat. To finish the hat I added a white icing and edge and ball. Then I made three coal buttons, a smiley mouth and eyes as well as a carrot nose. I then made two long red scarves and I used glue to attach the hat pieces to the head and my snowman was finished.

The trees

Next I made 6 green cones as trees and glued them to brown icing tree trunks. I also made a little brown bench to finish of the setting. I then glued everything to the cake and sieved icing sugar over the scene to give the illusion of snow.

Yule Log

Icing the cake with chocolate buttercream
To decorate they Yule Log, I made a thick chocolate buttercream with 3.5oz of margarine and 6oz of icing sugar and 1oz of cocoa powder. Once all of the ingredients were combined I cut ¼ of the yule log and put it at a right angle to the rest of the cake before covering in the buttercream. Once the cake was coated, I used a fork to give the Yule Log a woody texture. Then I put some plastic holly and Happy Christmas on to finish.

Christmas Cupcake Gifts

Penguin Cupcake
For my Christmas Presents I decided to make fondant cupcake toppers. To start with I made a penguin by rolling a ball of white fondant and wrapped a thin layer of black icing around it, leaving a white tummy showing. Then I made two flapping wings and left them to set whilst I made the head. I used white and black fondant to the eyes and used orange icing to form a little triangular beak. By now, the wings had dried enough for me to attach them with some edible glue.
Snowman Cupcake
Next I created a snowman from two balls of white icing stacked on top of each other. Next I made a small circle for the base of his top hat and left it to dry alongside a cylindrical hat. Then I made two coal buttons and eyes as well as a carrot nose. I used glue to attach the hat pieces to the head and my snowman was finished.

Santa Cupcake

To make the Santa, I made a large ball of red icing and a smaller ball of flesh coloured icing. I stuck small balls of peach icing as hands on the end of red arms and glued these to the body. I moulded red icing into a cone for the hat and added a white icing trim and ball. For the facial features, I used black and white icing for eyes and a small ball of flesh for the nose. To finish, I cut out a white beard and a belt for my festive character.

RudolphCupcake

A large ball of brown icing is the face of my reindeer. I made two small ears and used a knife to put an indent in them and glued them on the face. I moulded red icing into a hat shape and added a white edge and top of the hat. I made some eyes and made a hole for a cute mouth. A red nose finished my Rudolph cake topper.

For a Christmas pudding cupcake, I rolled out brown icing and a
"splodge" of white icing to stick to the cupcake. I added green holly leaves, cut out from a new cutter and two red icing holly berries.
